Why don’t I feel hungry after long runs?

I love food. Always have. I used to run so I can eat more. But ever since I started running more, I have noticed that I actually don’t have much of an appetite after a long run. This is very strange to me because I love food. Did I mention that already? 😄

I have read articles that state the importance of protein and carbs within 30 mins post-run to repair muscles and replenish glycogen. So despite not wanting to eat anything after my long runs, I’ve tried to follow this advice.

On Thursday night, after a 12km long run, all I could stomach was a bowl of cereal (carb – check) with milk (protein – check) and that’s all I ate for dinner. The next day, I woke up famished and ended up eating way too much.

Here’s what I had:

  • Breakfast: oatmeal with banana, toasted bagel with jam and cream cheese, 1 piece of orange
  • Lunch: chicken pad Thai
  • Snack: sesame snap, coffee
  • Dinner: chicken Parmasan with spaghetti (2 servings!), turkey broth with broccoli
  • Dessert: 2 scoops of ice cream

I haven’t felt this hungry in a long time. This is not normal and definitely not sustainable.

New goal: Try to eat more (than just cereal) after long runs so I’m not starving and overeating the next day.

Also, writing this all down makes me realize I need to include more fruits and veggies into my diet. 😣 Time to go grocery shopping!

You are my spirit animal Joyce :). I’m in roughly the same spot. Though, I get hangry two hours after. Still trying to find the right balance of post workout food to quiet that voice telling me to eat the entire fridge in the hours after training.
