This Saturday will be our last long run before we start tapering for #STWM. I can’t believe it’s coming up so quickly! Lisa and I only started to train 7 weeks ago which would typically not be enough for marathon training but we had a good (4x/week) base to build from so it’s all good. Otherwise, I wouldn’t recommend a 10-week training plan.
As soon as Lisa agreed to sign up for the marathon, I built us a training plan based on what I did for #TSFM which was based on advice from Jim and articles that I had read online.
Here are the guidelines that I followed:
- Working backwards from the race day, allow 3 weeks for tapering
- Longest run before tapering should be around 32km
- Weekly mileage should be around 60-70km before tapering
- Don’t increase mileage by more than 10% each week
- Increase mileage for 3 weeks and do a mini-taper on the 4th week
- Run at least 3x/week, 4x/week is better
- Incorporate intervals/hills/speed workouts
- Run the long runs at a runchat pace
I tried to follow the tips as much as possible but it wasn’t perfect because we only had 10 weeks to ramp up and we had a couple of “B” races that we had already signed up for that I had to fit in. The cells in green denotes a race day.

Even though it will only be 10 short weeks of training, I think we will be fine at the race. Only 1 more long run to go until taper time!! 😍
Thank you for doing all the mental work for our training 🙏🙏🙏😘 I know I’m on a great hands ❣️
