All I ever needed to know I learned through running

Thanks Lily for giving me the idea to put together a list of life lessons that I’ve learned from running. Here it is!

  1. There are no secrets to success. Just a lot of hard work and discipline. In order to be good at something, you got to put in the time to practise and train for it.
  2. You are capable of a lot more than you think. You can do hard things.
  3. It’s ok to go at your own pace but always strive to beat yesterday.
  4. If your goals don’t scare you, set new goals.
  5. Every journey starts with one step.
  6. Don’t take your health for granted.
  7. Take time to rest.
  8. Be prepared.
  9. Have a plan but also be flexible. You never know what you might discover off the beaten path.
  10. If you think you can’t go on, take a break but don’t quit.
  11. Find a community that can keep you accountable.
  12. It’s good to seek advice but you have to decide for yourself what you want to do.
  13. Be positive. People like to be around people who inspire them, motivate them, and believe in them.
  14. Surround yourself with people who will make you a better person.
  15. Be a person who makes others better.
  16. Celebrate each other’s successes.
  17. Enjoy the journey.

What are some of the lessons that you have learned?

Great list Joyce! I esp. like your first one. Totally agree.

    Some of my lessons learned…
    1) Life is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s a long journey and you’ll probably want to quit in the hard stretches (like at 30k!) but stay on course and finish well.

    2) If you have a bad (race) day, it’s ok. There’ll be another one tmr.

    3) Life’s short. Have fun, laugh more.

    4) Some successes are measured by time, others are measured by simply being present. (lesson from Chicago ;-))

    That’s all for now…still learning.
