Last weekend, Jeremy and I did a 3-day biking trip in the Niagara area. We left the kids with the inlaws and went with another couple (Eric and Grace) who had done this before and planned the whole trip for us.
Day 1
We started out in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Saturday, parked our cars in a free public parking lot on the Niagara Trail. The parking lot had a sign that said no parking between midnight to 6am but our friends told us to put a note on our car that said we have gone cycling and would be back on Monday. So sketchy but apparently that’s what people do!
We took off and our first stop was lunch. We were going to bike to a restaurant but we found a market along the way and decided to eat there instead. Turned out to be a great place to grab a quick bite.
We then headed toward our 1st AirBnb in Welland. The route was mostly flat and very enjoyable. Eric was in the front navigating and I mostly hung out in the back of the pack and coasted to make sure everyone was ok. Jeremy had to carry all our stuff in a panier on his bike which made his already heavy mountain bike even heavier. Poor guy, he had to work so much harder than the rest of us.
We made a few stops along the way to replenish water and ate some snacks and got to the AirBnb by about 4pm. There was a backyard pool so of course I jumped in for a quick swim. It was so refreshing!
After that, we walked to dinner at a fancy restaurant by the canal. We were all so underdressed (I was in shorts and flip flops) but oh well! ๐ The dinner was yummy and we went to pick up some dessert and breakfast for the next day and brought it back to the AirBnb.
Day 2
We made toast and scrambled eggs for breakfast and took our time getting ready. We headed off toward Fort Erie and passed by the Welland International Flatwater Center where I did my first triathlon last week. We stopped for lunch at a local diner in Port Colborne and biked a very long straight, flat, paved trail called the Friendship Trail.
At one point, I wanted to see how fast I could go so I just took off. I got to 40km/hr for about 10 seconds and had to slow back down because I was scared that I would wipe out. That’s probably the fastest I’ve ever biked!
We had ice cream at Crystal Beach which was packed with people celebrating the Canada Day long weekend. We didn’t actually go to the beach because they were charging $5/person for admission. Must have been becasue it was Canada Day.
We finally arrived at our AirBnb in Fort Erie and walked to the local convenience store to pick up some breakfast for the next day and then we headed to the lake. Eric and I ended up going into the lake for a quick dip. The water was super cold so I didn’t swim but it felt good to just be in the water.
We ordered pizza, pasta, and salads from an Italian place in town and had a great dinner without even needing to walk out.
Day 3
We had a bacon, egg, and toast breakfast and headed out for our last day.
We biked to Niagara Falls and had lunch at the Table Rock welcome center. There was a million people at the falls since it was Canada Day so lunch took a very long time.
Niagara falls is still just as majestic as always. It’s hard to believe we live so close to this place. We should go there more.
After lunch, we biked another ~30k to get back to the car. Thankfully, our cars were still there after parking illegally overnight for 2 nights.
Overall, I was super happy with how the trip turned out. It was awesome to ride with my husband because he loves biking and I want to do more of it with him. It was great that Eric and Grace planned the whole trip for us so we didn’t have to think at all. That was the best part! ๐
Looking forward to many more bike rides in the future!
So much fun! I want to be the 3rd wheel next time :p :p :p
