How to run through the summer heat

WRNY Run to the Over Floe icebergs at Mel Lastman Square

I don’t like to run in the summer because heat really affects me but I do it anyway because consistency is key. You don’t get to choose the weather for your race day so you need to be ready to run in any weather. Unless you are injured or need to take an extra rest day, a short run in the heat is better than no run at all.

Here are some tips for running through the summer:

  • Plan ahead and run in the morning
  • Stay hydrated with water or nuun, especially if you are running for more than 1 hour. Remember to hydrate before and after runs too.
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Wear polarized sunglasses – check out Marsquest
  • Run through sprinklers or splash pads
  • Run in the ravine or where there is shade
  • Slow down your pace. Feel free to skip speed workouts or swap it for a cooler day
  • Bring extra socks if you aren’t going home right away (sweaty socks are the worst!)
  • Bonus tip for women: when it’s really hot, wet your bra before you head out. This will help keep your core temperature down from the beginning

Feel free to add any other tips!
