Why I don’t like to meander

We did a great 10km tempo run yesterday. I tried a new strategy of not telling my run buddies that I was going to do tempo pace for about 4km. After about a 1km warm up, I simply started running faster as Dave and Parm ran with me. Dave was talking the whole time and we all maintained a great tempo pace (~5:25 min/km)! Pretty sure neither of them knew we were running so fast. 😁

Since the People’s Church loop is only 5km (+1km to get there), I needed to run another 4km to get to my 10km total. I was glad to have Parm run the rest of the way with me but we ended up running around and backtracking a bit because I didn’t have a 4km route planned out. And then I ended up overshooting and did 11km.

I realize I don’t like to run around aimlessly, or as Jim puts it “meander”. I associate “meandering” with a river that has lost its life. It’s a lazy river. It has no direction or purpose. Also, I feel that it takes too much brain power to decide where to go during the run. It’s hard for me to remember which street leads where at the best of times and this seems infinitely more difficult while I’m running. I don’t have that kind of brain power while my whole body is concentrating on running.

Next week, I’m going to plan out a better 4km extension to the Monday night People’s Church run so I don’t have to meander. Watch out for that tempo pace! 😄

Nutrition log:

  • Pre-run: orange about 2 hours before
  • Mid-run: water
  • Post-run: Vector cereal with milk, banana, strawberry shortcake

  1. I was confused.. I knew we were running faster, but… I always think to myself — this has to be easy for someone, so… I will become that someone. I was totally thrown off by your break from the second loop haha. At the same time, I had just PR’d an over/under cycling ride about an hour and a half prior to the run. I would have dropped off after 5k anyway. I just thought you decided for some reason only to do 5k, so somehow I felt I accomplished more than I thought…. Nope. 😛
